Q.: Karen, as a young man, I was taught that a man should wait for the lady to initiate a handshake. Does that rule still apply today?
A.: Today, a man does not need to wait for a lady to initiate a handshake, especially in a business setting. The business setting is gender-neutral. That means what is expected of men is expected of women — for instance, standing for introductions and shaking hands comfortably and often.
Handshaking is a powerful form of communication; a physical greeting that goes with your words. It speaks volumes about a person’s confidence, intentions and personality. It also can reveal how you feel toward others.
Handshaking is an accepted way to greet men and women in almost every culture in the world, however, there are a few exceptions internationally. Doing your homework is important because in some cultures a man would not initiate a handshake or even offer to shake a woman's hand.
