Art Basel is back in town, the holiday travel and social season is in full swing, and I-95 is teeth-rattling. Sounds like a perfect time to let someone else do the driving.
Now that Broward County has made peace with Uber, you might be willing to give the ride-sharing service, or its smaller competitor Lyft, a try.
First, download the Uber or Lyft app to your smartphone. Then what? Do you hop in the front seat? Do you tip? Can you light up?
Here are some do's and don'ts for first-time riders, from the intrepid chauffeurs.
CALL ME, READY
Using your smartphone app, request the driver when you are absolutely ready. "Don't make the driver wait once they've arrived,'' said Uber driver Virginia Davis of Palm Beach Gardens. "Text or call the driver if the location is hard to find like a hard-to-see house number or street."
FIRST-TIME RIDERS
As a courtesy so that you'll become a repeat customer, your first ride with Uber and Lyft is free (up to $22 on Uber and $20 for Lyft.) You can also get free rides by referring new passengers using a coupon code (which can be found on each of the apps and websites.)
